1979 JAPAN PILOT CUSTOM MAPLE WOOD 18K FINE NIB FOUNTAIN PEN SERVICED
For your consideration, we are pleased to offer for sale this 1979 Pilot Custom Maple Wood Fountain Pen, fitted with a great 18K gold Fine nib. This pen has been serviced, with a thorough internal ultrasonic cleaning, installation of a brand-new squeeze ink converter, and careful polishing of the exterior.
The maple wood cap and barrel are exceptionally well preserved, showing no dings, dents, cracks, or chips, and retain their warm, natural character. The cap is a friction-fit design that seats securely on the barrel every time. The top of the cap is marked with the classic Pilot “P” logo, while the cap band is stamped “PILOT CUSTOM MADE IN JAPAN.” The only noted wear is minor gold plating loss at the very top and bottom of the clip, consistent with age and careful use. The pen measures approximately 5 1/4 inches capped, 5 7/8 inches posted, and weighs a comfortable .62 ounces, making it light, well-balanced, and pleasant in hand.
This Pilot Custom is equipped with a squeeze-type ink converter, newly installed and fully tested with ink to ensure proper function and reliable filling.
The pen is fitted with an original 18K/750 Pilot Fine nib, marked “PILOT <F> JAPAN” and dated H679 (June 1979). The nib tip measures approximately .46 mm when checked with digital calipers, a Fine point, and offers a smooth, controlled writing experience. With light pressure, it produces an extra-fine line around .40 mm, and with moderate to firm pressure, it opens up to approximately 0.69 mm, providing subtle yet expressive line variation. The measurements were done with a digital caliper.
This Pilot Custom Maple Wood Fountain Pen is a wonderful example of late-1970s Japanese craftsmanship—elegant, understated, and becoming harder and harder to find in this condition. A superb choice for both collectors and writers who appreciate natural materials paired with Pilot’s renowned nib quality.
